Nothing screws up a player like hype. At least it screws up a player smart enough not to believe his own. That’s Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. Ironically all the hype going into NFL 2015 season was about how smart Luck is. And it’s undeniably true — Luck is as smart as they come. But all that football IQ put up exactly 14 points against the Buffalo Bills in a 27-14 season opening loss. Now the 0-1 Colts face the 1-0 New York Jets, coming of a 31-10 Browns blasting, on Monday Night Football. Everyone expects an Andrew Luck who has swallowed his Week One medicine and who will come out firing on all cylinders, playing like the Luck of the preseason profiles.
[Andrew Luck — New King Of The NFL?]
But the Bills may have revealed something bigger than intelligence — a powerful blitz. Buffalo blitzed Luck every other play (on average) last week, and Luck kept crapping out. He’s unlikely to roll so many sevens this week — and more likely to score them. The game’s at Indy and it’s in prime time and it’ll feature a Colts team that’s amp’d up coming off a frankly embarrassing loss. Andrew Luck is smart enough not to let the same thing happen again. But the Jets will blitz and hope their luck is good — and that Luck isn’t quite good enough. Monday Night Football is on ESPN, 8:30 p.m. ET.
