After winning the Women’s World Cup, star forward Abby Wambach ran over to her wife of nearly two years, Sarah Huffman, who gave her a kiss. The video went viral, as it coincided with the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage in all 50 states. Wambach and Huffman got married in 2013 in Hawaii.
Huffman is a soccer player, too. Before going pro, Huffman was a four-year starter at the University of Virginia. She is one of the top players in the school’s history. When the midfielder graduated in 2006, she had 12 goals and 28 assists. In 2009, Huffman was the No. 1 overall pick in the Women’s Professional Soccer General Draft and signed with the Washington Freedom. She later played with the Pali Blues in the W-League and the Western New York Flash. Huffman recently retired from soccer (November 2014). She last played for the Portland Thorns FC. P.S. Her nickname is Huffy. She and Wambach live in Portland.
