The father-and-son owners of American Pharaoh, the brilliant horse that is going for the elusive Triple Crown title on Saturday, will be the subjects of the TV show The Secret Lives of the Super Rich (June 4, 10pm, CNBC). The timing of the episode is ideal as the Belmont Stakes will take place on Saturday, June 6. The big question is — can American Pharaoh win at Belmont without ever having run the track before? Can he win three races in five weeks?
The father-and-son owners of American Pharaoh, Ahmed and Justin Zayat are betting yes. They bought the horse at The Saratoga Sale auction in 2013 for $300,000. In American Pharoah’s first year, he won 5 races earning $1.4 million. At the time, experts said the horse was worth $10 million. After winning the Kentucky Derby this year, the horse was valued at $15-$20 million. After winning the Preakness, his value was upped another $5 million. If he wins the Belmont Stakes, American Pharaoh will be valued at $30 million. The Secret Lives of the Super Rich airs Thursdays at 10pm on CNBC.
