Laverne “Kay” Parsons was brutally killed at the request of her next door neighbor Rebecca Bowers Sears. Sears asked her 20-year-old son Christopher Sean Bowers to do it, and Bowers did. Police in Augusta, Georgia found Parsons’ body in her garage. She was beaten to death with a baseball bat and a claw hammer. Prosecutors said “Sears had an affair with Parsons’ husband and orchestrated the murder to eliminate her romantic rival.” And then it gets more bizarre.
To derail the investigation, mother Sears and son Bowers staged an attack just days after Parsons’ murder. Bowers showed up at the physical therapy office where both women worked and shot his mother in the leg. It was a botched attempt to throw the police off the scent. The mother and son were both sentenced to life in prison. They negotiated a guilty plea to avoid the death penalty. Dateline NBC will investigate the case on May 8 at 9pm.
