Michael Jordan had his famous “love of the game” clause in his contract. It meant that Jordan–unlike most zillion dollar athletes–was allowed to play basketball anytime and anywhere without violating his NBA deal. Other athletes have pursued pleasure outside their contractual obligations and it has ended in disaster. Jay Williams of Duke and a short-lived NBA career comes to mind.
Superstar QB and reigning Super Bowl champ Tom Brady’s recent daredevil act bring Williams more than Jordan to mind. Brady posted video of himself jumping into water from a high cliff in the tropics. Brady’s too smart to have violated his contract by making the leap–and by making it public–but if/when Patriots owner Robert Kraft gets a look he might send Tom a little note. Maybe introduce him to bowling or shuffleboard. (Note: we checked–and there is no way to deflate water to lessen impact.)
Never doing that again! #AirBrady
