On March 9, 2015, 47 U.S. Senators sent a letter to the Iranian government stating that any nuclear agreement brokered by President Obama would not be upheld once the president leaves office. The Logan Act, a 1799 law, forbids unauthorized citizens from negotiating with foreign governments. “Violation of the Logan Act is a felony, punishable under federal law with imprisonment of up to three years.” There’s a smart breakdown about whether the Senators violated the act–and whether they could be prosecuted–here.
In response to the violation, a petition has been created and is posted on the White House website. So far 14,450 signatures have been added. 85,550 more are needed by April 8 to reach the goal of 100,000.
