Academy Award winning actress Mo’Nique (Precious) says she’s been blackballed from Hollywood. After winning an Oscar in 2010, she thought the roles would be pouring in but they didn’t. Mo’Nique says roles in Lee Daniels’ film The Butler and TV show Empire “just went away.” Daniels is the one who broke the “blackball” news to Mo’Nique. He said “her demands through Precious were not always in line with the campaign. This soured her relationship with the Hollywood community.”
Mo’Nique might have been blackballed from Hollywood, but Mo’Nique is about to crowned Queen of the Independent Film Festivals. Her new film, Blackbird, is winning tons of awards. Set in a small Southern Baptist community, Mo’Nique plays a God loving/fearing mother of a gay teenager played by emerging star Julian Walker. Isaiah Washington also stars. Washington, too, knows the blackball. In 2006, rumors surfaced that Washington had insulted his Grey’s Anatomy co-star T. R. Knight with a homophobic slur. Washington apologized. Shortly after, he was dropped from the show. Blackbird will be in select theaters in April.
