The trailer for the horror movie Unfriended starts out nice. It’s a collage of childhood photos and videos – kids learning how to ride a bike, graduating from high school. “Online your memories last forever…But so do your mistakes.” (Warning: the following description contains brutality.) Unfriended follows the life of Laura Barns, who got drunk at a party and, it appears, gang raped. Three days after a graphic video was anonymously posted to the Internet, Laura kills herself. Her suicide is also captured on video.
After Laura’s death, a handful of kids from her town are on Skype when a stranger joins their chat. Someone hacks into Laura’s account. “Tell me who posted the video. Or someone dies.” And then the lights literally go out and one by one the kids are brutally murdered, in front of their webcams. Unfriended will be released in April.
