President Obama is planning to announce a plan for free community college during his State of the Union address on Tuesday night. It’s a powerful, populist idea with strong appeal to Americans who think education is the key to equality and meritocracy. But Speaker of the House John Boehner would like to shake it off. He’s firing back a protest using his pal (?) Taylor Swift, the most popular musical artist on the planet.
Boehner pushed out a blog post against the plan that uses not one–but 12!–Taylor Swift animated gifs to help make his point. It goes so far as to ask the President for an apology for proposing a break on education costs because, you know, people are so furious about it? Swift has not endorsed the plan or Boehner’s objection. Swifties? There are a lot of them (Swifties are Taylor’s fans), but a large segment falls right in the demographic expected to embrace the Obama proposal.
