Billionaire Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban went on The Beast radio show in LA and admitted what a lot of people around the NBA keep quiet about: he wants the Lakers to suck! And not just now. As Cuban told sports talk host Fred Roggin: “You know me, Fred. Personally, I just hope they suck forever.”
It may not be forever, but the Lakers sure did suck against Cuban’s Mavs that night–losing 140-106 and looking outclassed, overmatched, disorganized and finally sad. (Not a knock: the players literally look sad. Kobe Bryant looks like a kid carrying a big plastic steering wheel that’s not attached to a car.) Cuban told ESPN a few years back, when the Lakers acquired Dwight Howard, that he hoped the Lakers would suck. (They did.) But that time he admitted he hoped they sucked “you know, like any other team.” It’s pretty simple: if the other teams suck, his team wins. Cuban’s only rare for admitting it. Again it may not be forever, but it sure is going to seem that way for Lakers fans. Cuban has had a lot of his hopes fulfilled. You can add the Lakers sucking to the list.
