You hear all about how different technologies will revolutionize the world–and no technology gets certain people more ecstatic than 3D printing. Sure you may be able to print your own electric car one day, or spaceship, but for now it’s the smaller things that show what’s possible. And when you combine a great DIY attitude with a love of family, you can use 3D printing to make a beautiful story.
J-dag on Reddit did just that, taking a beautiful old inherited stove and restoring it to spec with just ingenuity and the bold new tech. Half the classic gas knobs on the stove were missing and irreplaceable–no one sold them–until this Reddit user “took a ton of measurements and booted up Blender.” J-dag swiftly modeled the new knobs and Shapeways delivered them. “The whole thing took $20, a few hours of work, and a few weeks of waiting,” writes the junior engineer. “My parents are so excited to have the stove complete again, which really means a lot to me.”
