After last night’s drawn out announcement ceremony in New York City, Tom Watson added Hunter Mahan, Webb Simpson and Keegan Bradley to his Ryder Cup squad. About 12 hours earlier, European captain Paul McGinley did the same, adding Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, and Stephen Gallacher to his squad. The teams are set, and they’re preparing to do battle at Gleneagles in Scotland September 23-28.
This Ryder Cup signals a changing of the guard in golf. There’s no Tiger Woods. There is a guy – Jordan Spieth – who was not six months old the last time Watson was a Ryder Cup captain (1993). Jim Furyk and Phil Mickelson may likely be captains the next time a Ryder Cup rolls around. The teams are more about selfies than saddle shoes, and that’s a good thing.
