First Target was targeted by data-jackers, and now Home Depot is having “some unusual activity” probed by data-security experts. Paula Drake, representing the chain, emailed Reuters: “At this point, I can confirm that we’re looking into unusual activity and we are working with our banking partners and law enforcement to investigate. If we confirm that a breach has occurred, we will make sure customers are notified immediately.” (Home Depot customers: consider yourself notified.) Drake’s statement echoes the initial hours of Target’s 2013 data breach, when hackers stripped servers of approximately 40 million payment-card numbers.
Let’s hope that the KrebsonSecurity website team (which first noticed stolen card information was for sale on underground “black-sites”), collaborating with other authorities, halts what could become a very big problem for who-knows-how-many Home Depot shoppers.
