It seems like every other person you meet has got an idea for an app that will change the world (and maybe one-tenth of those people are actually working to develop it). But a new development platform called Happy Seed is taking a big-picture view: it’s going to change the world of apps. Released earlier this month by Brooklyn-based tech star Happy Fun Corp, Happy Seed incorporates a number of time-tested coding gems that, taken, together, could revolutionize the process of app development. Essentially, Happy Seed lets developers skip the worst of the grunt work—boring and messy and time-consuming—and jump ahead to the creative coding. (It helps developers pass through the “configuration phase” more quickly.) Think of it as a wealthy benefactor who rents you a studio, buys your supplies, and mixes together all the colors for you. All you have to do is paint.
Oh, and did we mention it’s all free? Happy Fun Corp. co-founder Ben Schippers says it was important to them to make it open source, as a way of giving back to the tech community for the support they’ve seen. Now, of course, it won’t do everything for you. Even with Happy Seed, you still have to know your stuff. After all, the next killer app will not be built on ideas alone—the face, the eyes, the muscles and bones (and for some people, the sexy parts) are all about the code. But being able to zip through some of the dull but essential steps will let people with big ideas get their product to market much much faster. And in a world where a one-day delay could be the difference between success and failure and literally every second counts, a platform like Happy Seed can make a difference.
