Singing “Alien,” from 2013’s Britney Jean without auto-tune, Britney lights up the Internet
A leaked version of “Alien” has Spears sounding a little off key, let’s say. And the Internet, well known as a place where people are kind to one another, has lit up with flames about Britney’s ineptitude. So much so that gallant producer William Orbit defended the singer on Facebook: “I’d like to affirm that ANY singer when first at the mic at the start of a long session can make a multitude of vocalisations in order to get warmed up.”
Ah, that’s a multitude she’s making! The leak of the “Alien” audio is the vocal version of the time Britney shaved her head. And now, just as when her famous blonde mane went missing–the surface sheen of the star peeled away–the singer is left seeming vulnerable and a little reduced. Don’t believe it. After the head-shaving incident fans rallied around their newly humbled star. This time Britney fans, and probably Mr. Orbit, will point out that Norah Jones probably gets the auto-tune treatment, too. Britney Spears never wowed anybody with her vocal chops to begin with–her fame rested almost entirely on her looks, her drive and ability to connect with young girls in a formative–often difficult–time of life. If Britney wore baggy pants no one would let her near a microphone. Especially if she sounded like this:
