Michael Todd Cohen approached me on a subway train ten years ago and asked if I was Evan Handler. I thought he was a fan. When I said yes, he told me he was the biological son of my cousin, Cheryl, who had been searching for him for years, but who had yet to locate him. At the time, Michael told me he was still trying to work up the courage to meet her. Since then, Cheryl and her mother have become close with Michael, and attended his wedding last year. I have watched from a distance as the young man I met has matured, found work he enjoyed, a strong circle of friends, and a man to love and marry.
Horribly, Michael and his new husband Daniel were the only two people seriously injured in a high-rise fire in Manhattan a few days ago. Daniel did not survive, and Michael is hospitalized in serious or critical condition. Here is a link to a page set up by his friends, asking for funds to assist in his recovery.
