Why did LeBron James mention Toronto? Why not one of the dozens of other cities where German luxury luggage maker Rimowa is available — and where James has been? Like Los Angeles, for example? If you’re LeBron James — especially new vintage LeBron James of the reportedly “dysfunctional” Los Angeles Lakers — nothing you say or write can be taken merely at face value. So much is communicated these days through dog whistles or code, especially on social media.

[Note: Urban dictionary defines dog whistle “a type or strategy of communication that sends a message that the general population will take a certain meaning from, but a certain group that is “in the know” will take away the secret, intended message.”]
So people are talking about how LeBron James — just before the beginning of the NBA Finals featuring the Toronto Raptors — decides to kick off his advertising partnership with Rimowa with a mention of Toronto. Want more dog whistle fodder? Rimowa tagline is this: “No one builds a legacy by standing still.” Sometimes it’s shortened to: NEVER STILL. That’s a tantalizing message to NBA fans who see either James or Raptors star Kawhi Leonard on the move again after this season.
James writes: “When you know you know. Stopped in @rimowa one day on the road in Toronto a few years back and they’ve been by my side ever since. Only right we make it official.”
Speaking of “never still,” around the time tennis icon Roger Federer signed on with Rimowa (see video below), he was so never still that he left his longtime partner Nike and signed with Uniqlo.
