Three-time Grammy Award winner Kelly Clarkson is back to host the 2019 Billboard Music Awards for the consecutive second year. The Voice coach is excited about seeing all the live performances during the show and she’s “stoked” about her monologue this year. When asked which artists she’d like to see win this year, she mentions Cardi B. (“I’m a huge fan”) and 20-year-old Shawn Mendes.
Clarkson says: “Shawn Mendes is pretty underrated. He gets nominated a lot but I don’t know if he wins as much as she should. He’s a really talented dude.” Remember, at the 2018 BMAs, Kelly sang Mendes’ song “There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back” on stage, and she sings it on tour (see video below).

While Shawn Mendes has been nominated for four separate Billboard Music Awards, he did win Artist of the Year at the 2018 Billboard Live Music Awards (which honors top tours). And for the first time, he was nominated at the Grammy Awards in 2019, for Best Song of the Year “In My Blood” and Best Pop Vocal Album (Shawn Mendes).
Keep in mind: Kelly Clarkson has been nominated for nine Billboard Music Awards but has yet to win one! The three-hour 2019 Billboard Music Awards show will air Wednesday, May 1 at 8 pm on NBC.
