Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr calls it “hanging banners,” and that’s what the Warriors have done in three of the last four NBA seasons. Championship banners, that is. Kerr was rightfully bemused then when a reporter asked him what the Warriors “team identity” is. (Hey, the reporter rightfully asked because the Warriors have shown some uncharacteristic softness in the first round of the playoffs, allowing the LA Clippers to take two games so far.)
Kerr repeated the question back, to stress his incredulity. “What’s the identity of our club?” Kerr asked with a grin. Kerr answered as frankly as frankly as possible: “Um back-to-back champions. I don’t know we’re, um, really good. I mean, we’re hanging banners. What’s our identity? We play fast we play defense… maybe we should do an instructional video later and we’ll send it to you.” The “really good” Warriors instructional video would presumably show how to win 75% of the last 4 NBA titles. Now that is a video destined to go viral.
