Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are both “smart and deep thinkers,” according to sports insider Skip Bayless, but they also each have a lot of “kid-like” tendencies. The two superstars who Bayless says have been eating together and taking trips together (to Miami, after the All-Star Game, for one) are doing everything but having a “sleepover.”
That sleepover, if it happens before July 1, will tilt the balance of the entire NBA. Because the two players who Bayless describes as the “two best closers in basketball” (take that, Steph) may decide in their pajamas — their really luxurious pajamas — to play together somewhere like New York City.
Until that moment comes, Bayless says the two players are holding two good teams hostage. (Understand what he means, but Golden State does not look like it is being held hostage…)
Then Bayless corrects himself, saying KD and Kyrie are holding the whole NBA hostage. Bayless imagines a scenario where the two killer closers are eating together and a whim “could change the whole NBA landscape” as they decide “hey, let’s go there (fill in the blank).” Brian Windhorst earlier reported that Kyrie and KD had become, as Bayless relates, “like a middle school couple” doing everything together.
Durant has already shifted the balance of the NBA once recently — and maybe Irving’s demand to leave Cleveland shifted it too, if not by making Boston a champ (yet) then by dismantling the Cavaliers championship squad. This KD, Kyrie story is going to get a lot more play. Especially since the two have a good chance of meeting in the 2019 NBA Finals.
