They are both unlikely Texans in a way — the definitively Blue Blood George W. Bush whose long family legacy is centered in WASP-y Connecticut and blue-uniformed Dirk Nowitzki who hails from Germany. But they are Texans for sure: Bush was governor of the Lone Star State before he became President of the United States and Nowitzki scored every one of his thirty-one-thousand-plus NBA points for the Dallas Mavericks.
So on a night that celebrated Nowitzki’s extraordinary achievement in the NBA — a night featuring NBA royalty like Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen and Charles Barkley — it’s fitting that Bush was among those who honored Nowitzki’s great career as it drew to a close.
Bush famously paints now that he’s retired. And so the former POTUS invited Dirk to come down the road and paint with him if he gets “bored” in retirement. Nowitzki has always been one to take advantage of the opportunities that come his way, so expect a couple of portraits in the future — one of Dirk by W, and one of W by Dirk.
