Duke basketball legend Christian Laettner truly had a career like no other basketball player. The collegiate superstar still provides the highlight of highlights each March for the NCAA Tournament, which would never run without showing Laettner’s indelible buzzer beater against Kentucky in 1992. (see below).
That got Laettner a ticket to become the only collegiate player on the Dream Team — the Jordan-Bird-Magic-Barkley-etc juggernaut that changed global basketball as it trounced its way to Olympic gold in Barcelona that same year.
So Laettner is the perfect person to judge Duke talent, past and present. And the one guy everybody wants to know about is sensation Zion Williamson, who is destined to be a #1 pick in the NBA Draft. Laettner told Dan Patrick that Zion is like a 6’7″ Bo Jackson on the court. Laettner said Zion reminds him of three guys, Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley, and LeBron James.
Why Zion Williamson is like Shaq, according to Laettner: “Is [Zion] the most special athletically gifted person I’ve ever seen on the basketball court? Yes. Zion is like Shaq down low. When Shaq got the ball withing six feet of the bucket there was nothing you could do. When Zion gets the ball down there there’s not much you could do.”
