One of the most heartbreaking stories on Season 5 of Return to Amish belongs to new cast member Dawn. She is one of the three young Mennonites who have been hired by Jeremiah and Carmela to help them sell Amish Donuts at fairs across the country. The other two, Lowell and Shelly, are African-Americans who were adopted by Mennonite families at a very young age and now they want to know where they come from. Dawn left the Mennonite community after a family tragedy and failed marriage.
On Return to Amish, Dawn explains that she met her future husband at the age of 17. She said she cried on her wedding day because she was so happy. But, according to Dawn, “it turned into a nightmare.”
On the day she learned that her 18-year-old brother Eric Martin was killed in a car accident, and that her husband of nine months (who already confessed to having a pornography addiction) had been cheating on her, “having affairs.” When Dawn turned to the church for help, she says, “They told me it was my fault for not being a good enough wife.” Return to Amish airs Sundays at 10 pm on TLC.
