Simple Sugars is a line of all-natural sugar scrubs designed for sensitive skin. The products exfoliate and moisturize at the same time — so no lotion needed. The innovative skincare company was founded by Lani Lazzari of Pittsburgh, PA, who says she created the product when she was just 7 years old. Since infancy, Lazzari has suffered from eczema. For years she couldn’t find a product for her sensitive skin — let alone one that smelled good. So she made her own and it took away her eczema and it cleared up her aunt’s psoriasis. One year after graduating from high school, Lazzari pitched her business on Shark Tank in March 2013. She made a deal with billionaire shark Mark Cuban (who’s also from Pittsburgh) — $100,000 in exchange for 33 percent equity.

Three years later in 2016, on Beyond the Tank, Cuban visited Simple Sugars at its new headquarters. At the time, Lazzari was working on a men’s line, Smooth for Men. Lazzari gets things done. Today there are three different products in the Smooth for Men line – facial scrubs, body scrubs, and a foot scrub. In 2017, Lazzari was one of 25 business people named a Thiel Fellow. It’s a two-year fellowship for young entrepreneurs with $100,000 and mentorship from the Thiel Foundation’s network of technology entrepreneurs, investors, and scientists. The program, which was created and founded by billionaire Peter Thiel, encourages fellows to pursue full-time entrepreneurship instead of going to college.
