The 48 Hours episode “Reality Kids” investigates the September 12, 2013 murder of Will Carter, Jr. His girlfriend Victoria Rickman was the person who called 911. Rickman said she had shot Carter in self-defense because he raped her. (Carter had been shot nine times.) Seven hours after that call, Atlanta Detective Summer Benton arrested Rickman and charged her with murder. With Benton was a camera crew for the TV show Inside Homicide on the Discovery network. The episode aired before Rickman’s trial. Rickman tells 48 Hours correspondent Erin Moriarty, “Unfortunately, I have been humiliated and dehumanized by the system publicly without my consent.”

Detective Summer Benton continues to dispute Rickman’s claim of rape and denies that the cameras affected her investigation. Benton told the cameras that Rickman did a “tactical reload” of the gun although there is no evidence to support that theory. According to 48 Hours, “even prosecutors abandoned the detective’s theory that Victoria had to have reloaded.” In November 2017, Rickman was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Since the murder of Will Carter, Jr., Detective Benton has since appeared on ten episodes of the A&E series The First 48 Hours and is currently promoting ATL Homicide which premieres on TV One on Monday, July 9th 10/9c. 48 Hours airs Saturdays at 10pm on CBS.
