That blond girl walking through her high school unlocking everything in sight doesn’t just have her iPhone‘s help, she’s got the jazzy score produced by Pete Cannon to help her with her high-tech “open sesame” act. In the fantastic world of Apple ads, the high schooler doesn’t just unlock her iPhone through facial recognition — no, she can unlock anything she lays eyes on, fulfilling a metaphorical promise Apple has been making for decades. Lockers, doors, an animal laboratory — everything pops open at the astonished girl’s empowered glance.
Pete Cannon is a successful music producer and artist. The music backing the Apple ad is sampled from a Cannon cut called “Bang Bang.” Cannon said this about it when it dropped:
The new @Apple iPhoneX advert is out AND I PRODUCED THE MUSIC FOR IT 😉 It’s for worldwide use across Cinema and TV. It don’t get much bigger laaaa! Have a watch if you’ve got a moment… #iPhoneX https://t.co/SkPGORMM1K

Turns out parts (most of?)”Bang Bang” sampled a tune (‘Meri Nazar Hai Tujh Pe’) created by Indian composer R D Burman for an Indian movie called The Burning Train. Both the Burman music video and the Apple ad video are below, so you can hear the influence. Cannon, who received full credit on the Apple spot, addressed the legal status of the sampling in a tweet he posted after many pointed out the music’s pedigree. Cannon says his sample samples R D Burman. See below:
Hi Guys, I just want to address the sample used in the new Apple iPhoneX advert. It samples a track from the great R D Burman’s ‘Burning Train’ and it’s a MAGICAL piece of music! It was cleared/licensed via Blurred Recs courtesy of Saregama. Everyone is on board and loves it. 😉
