On the third Battle Round on The Voice Season 14, Adam Levine pits Genesis Diaz against Mia Boostrom. Mia is the 25-year-old wedding singer from Massachusetts who competed on America’s Got Talent. On Season 4 (2009) at the age of 15, Mia made it to the Quarterfinals. What she wasn’t prepared for was the online bullying about her weight that ensued after her TV performances.
Years later, when Mia made a serious commitment to eat better and exercise (she had already lost 20 lbs.) she was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD) which caused her hormones to slow down her metabolism “to pretty much a dead stop.” PCOD is known to trigger rapid weight gain as it did for reality TV star Whitney Way Thore of My Big Fat Fabulous Life struggles, and singer Maddie Zahm on this season of American Idol. But even after the PCOD diagnosis, Mia kept to her strict diet and workout regimen and lost 100lbs. (see post below). The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
