Eighteen-year-old Alexa Cappelli is one of the youngest artists competing on The Voice, Season 14. She’s also one of the most soulful. For her Blind Audition, she sang the Kiki Dee song “I’ve Got the Music In Me,” and got Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson to turn around. But when Alexa told Kelly she sang her “People Like Us” for a talent show, and then they sang a part of the song together, Adam knew he didn’t have a chance. He was right. Now during the Battles, Alexa faces Hannah Goebel.

Where does an 18-year-old California girl like Alexa get that soul from? She’s experienced pain. Alexa revealed on The Voice that her younger brother died from Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) when he was just 32 hours old. It’s a rare congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped. The left side of the heart is supposed to pump oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body. The causes of HLHS are unknown. The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8pm on NBC.
