With the Cleveland Cavaliers blowing up their team to try a younger approach for King James, mulitple Cavaliers hit the bricks (including Isaiah Thomas). But only one certain Hall of Famer is headed out of The Land, and that’s recently arrived Dwyane Wade whose so-so tenure in Cleveland reminded seasoned NBA fans of when the 76ers got Chris Webber to help Allen Iverson — but Webber’s legs were gone. Wade — who still has some spring in his step — is headed back to Miami, where his uniform was always going to hang in the rafters anyway. He joins probably the best coach in the NBA in Erik Spoelstra (though there are so many good coaches in the league now, it’s hard to say).
Wade also joins a Heat team that has a lot of the qualities — youth, speed, athleticism — that LeBron James needs in Cleveland. The gracious Wade, who left Miami two season ago (a little miffed) to fulfill his dream of playing for his hometown Bulls, thanked everybody upon hearing news of the trade, including the Heat and the Cavs fan base, saying “I did my best” and hoping that the fans had noticed. Wade also echoed Michael Jordan with a simple declaration: “I’M BACK!!!” Those were the words Jordan used to say he was ending his baseball sojourn and returning to the NBA. Jordan won three titles upon his return. It’s worth noting that the Heat, before a recent five game losing streak, looked like they might compete for the Eastern Conference crown. Wade closes with “let’s go Heat” — and you know he means it. He’s not done yet, you get the feeling.
