Officer Marcus McNeil has been identified as the New Orleans police officer shot and killed in the line of duty on October 13. McNeil was shot in an altercation with a 30-year-old male whose identity has not been released — the shooter was also shot at the scene. The attack on four officers is being described as an ambush by CNN. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced the McNeil’s deathwith a “heavy heart” offering prayers to his family and the New Orleans Police Department. McNeil, 29, was a beloved member of the NOPD force. He was on patrol in the 7th district when the attack occurred.
McNeil was popular among colleagues for his sense of humor and dedication. He was given the nickname Milk Dud by a perp who was trying to get a rise out of him, comparing his “shiny bald head” to the famous candy. McNeil embraced the nickname, regaling the NOLA website with the story of how he got the name: “I arrested a subject who was attempting to get a rise out of me by calling me ‘Milk Dud’ because of my shiny bald head that he believed resembled the candy milk duds. Everyone in the district found it hilarious, saying it was true and then began calling me ‘Milk Dud.’ I’ve since embraced the name often referring to myself as ‘The Dud’ when bragging about a good arrest.” McNeil’s death is a blow not just to his family and the police force, but to New Orleans as it battles a reputation as a murder-filled city. (Mayor Landrieu’s next tweet was about the murder rate falling.) McNeil had been on the force since 2014, according to local news FOX 8. He was in training when he got the nickname and wore it proudly ever since. McNeil leaves behind a wife and two children.
