There are a couple of ways things can go if you’re a former member of the Trump administration. If you’re former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, you can be feted at Emmy Awards and people can laugh at your former role as controversial lightning rod and obfuscator. (Although not everybody will be so quick to agree that bygones should be bygones.) If on the other hand you’re former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, instead of being on the Emmys with the in crowd, you’re stuck soliciting people for cash for your legal defense fund. Because you need help defending yourself against what your former boss Donald Trump sometimes calls “the Russia thing.”
[Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn Has 4 College Degrees]
Flynn served in the National Security Advisor role for less than a month before offering his resignation under pressure about his involvement with Russia during the election. It was an expensive job to have taken, it turns out. Flynn is now asking for help with his mounting legal costs. The retired Army Lt. General has created a website called mikeflynndefensefund.org. The solicitation says: “Please note that donations of any amount are welcome, but the Michael T. Flynn Legal Defense Fund will accept donations only from U.S. citizens and permanent residents. All donated funds will be used solely to defray attorneys’ fees and other costs related to legal representation.” The language makes it clear that Flynn won’t take money from the Russians to help fund his defense. Flynn’s site doubles down on this elsewhere, saying: “Any donations that are identified as originating with foreign nationals will be declined or refunded.”
