The Ohio State University is playing its 128th football season in 2017. Head Coach Urban Meyer has coached just five of them — but his impact on one of college football’s most esteemed programs has been gigantic. Asked to assess Meyer’s rank among the all-time best collegiate coaches, fellow coaching legend Bobby Bowden has said: “he’s as good as any of them.” Meyer has earned the plaudits. He’s 61-6 since taking over the Buckeyes, a win percentage of .910 that actually improves on Meyer’s extraordinary career win percentage of .850.
Meyer’s Buckeyes have lost exactly two games in the Big Ten, owning a 38-2 mark during his tenure going into 2017. Meyer has added offensive guru (and former Indiana University head coach) Kevin Wilson to his arsenal this year with Wilson taking the offensive coordinator job. The Buckeyes open up with an away game at IU’s Memorial Stadium, where Wilson will look to put a stamp on his new Ohio State tenure with a big win. In order to distinguish himself in the Urban Meyer universe, Wilson and the Buckeyes offense will have to light up the scoreboard: Urban Meyer’s teams are 15-0 in opening day games with an average margin of victory of 31.1 points.
