NBA Hall of Famer and hoops legend Isiah Thomas has had to contend with being displaced by another NBA star named Isaiah Thomas, and the first Thomas — with a slightly different spelling — is handling it with grace. When characterized as a big Isaiah Thomas fan on NBA TV, the legend Isiah made a correction: “I’m a huge fan,” he said. Any reasonable basketball fan has to be: the Boston Celtics are being led by as dynamic a player as they’ve had in forever, as Isaiah Thomas — all 5’9″ of him — is among the NBA’s scoring leaders and Boston has resumed its place among the NBA elite. They’re battling for first place in the Eastern Conference.
Talking with Boston great Kevin McHale, Isiah Thomas said it was amazing that a guy who was leading a first-place Celtics team in scoring with Larry Bird-type numbers isn’t automatically the NBA MVP. But Thomas acknowledged the historic seasons that Russell Westbrook and James Harden are having, blocking Thomas’s MVP chances. Still Isiah the legend said Thomas the Celtic still “has got a chance win the MVP.” He followed that up with this: “He could possibly be in the Hall of Fame.” Big time praise from a big time player for the Celtics star.
