On the Modern Family episode “Do It Yourself,” while Phil tries to convince his father-in-law Jay to invest in a property, Jay feels intimated at home when his wife Gloria hires Coach Gary to teach their son Joe to throw. Gary turns out to be a handyman as well. As Gary explains to Jay, “I’m not afraid of heights and I have big hands.” Jay smiles at his wife, “Those are fun details.”
Coach Gary is portrayed by former NFL player, Super Bowl champion Peyton Manning. He’s been on TV before, and just as funny, when he hosted Saturday Night Live and played a mean United Way coach (see clip below). Modern Family airs Wednesdays at 9pm on ABC.
