While tennis champion Roger Federer meets Rafael Nadal at the 2017 Australian Open, his wife Mirka Federer will watch from the stands. Mirka née Vavrinec Federer was a Swiss professional tennis player, too. They met at the 2000 Summer Olympics where Mirka was playing doubles. (Story goes Martina Navratilova met Mirka when she was 9 and arranged for Mirka’s first tennis lesson.) Mirka reached her career-high WTA singles ranking of World No. 76 in 2001, the year she reached the third round of the U.S. Open. She retired from tennis in 2002 due to a recurring foot injury.
[Biographer Chris Bowers updated his 2013 biography, Federer, in 2016]
Mirka and Roger married in April 2009 in Switzerland. She gave birth to identical twin girls, Myla and Charlene in July 2009. In 2014, they had another set of twins, boys Leo and Lennart aka Lenny.
