Shark Tank has been airing short segments about the individual sharks on the show and their entrepreneurial success. The camera recently followed billionaire Mark Cuban to his hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. Up next is Daymond John from Queens, New York. He grew up with some of the greatest hip hop artists of the time including LL Cool J and Run DMC. “People thought there was something in the water,” Daymond says. “It was a world you had to be immersed in.”
Daymond says he was initially inspired by a De La Soul video, where some members of the band wore a particular hat – “a cut off sleeve with a tie on the top.” Daymond’s mom showed him how to sew and he sold those hats outside the Coliseum. He famously made $800 in one hour. The rest is FUBU (For Us, By Us) history. John writes in detail about his success as an entrepreneur in his book Display of Power: How FUBU Changed a World of Fashion, Branding and Lifestyle.
