Adam Bain is leaving Twitter after six years. He didn’t say what he’d do next. The COO, formerly the head of global revenue, leaves as rumors that Twitter could be acquired die down. The company continues to be a vital element in global communication — the American presidential election, for instance, is unimaginable without it — but its success as a commercial enterprise is less sure. Twttter has been losing money and growth, once remarkable, has been slow.
As COO Bain was in charge of operations, a difficult position given Twitter’s challenging task of trying to grant users freedom of expression while also limiting abuse. Bain is widely seen as having performed admirably in a role that carried tremendous responsibility. In a series of tweets, of course, Bain expressed his gratitude for his Twitter experience as he announced his departure.
