76ers legend Allen Iverson, a newly elected Hall of Famer, showed up at a 76ers practice this week. He said the winless 76ers would soon get a victory if they kept fighting, reminding them that Philly loves a fighter. Speaking about 76ers center Joel Embiid, Iverson said: “I knew he was going to be great, and he’ll be greater. He’s going to only get better. He’s going to make the guys around him better as well.”
Embiid responded with 25 points, 16 in a fourth quarter and overtime that saw the Sixers stay in the fight, just as AI advised. Embiid was drafted No. 3 but because of an injury is playing in his first NBA season. He reminds many of an even bigger Hakeem Olajuwon. The 76ers have been bringing Embiid along cautiously, dishing out his minutes in conservative fashion. Embiid scored all of his 25 points in just 25 minutes of play. Ten 76ers played double digit minutes for coach Brett Brown.
