The protagonist of the new drama Pure Genius is James Bell (Augustus Prew), a Silicon Valley billionaire who’s been on the cover of Time magazine and wants to change the world. He’s built a hospital in Silicon Valley called Bunker Hill which he refers to as “the most revolutionary medical center on earth.” Bell makes grandiose claims to patients that most doctors would never make. To a 9-months pregnant woman with advanced cancer who’s opted not to go through chemotherapy, Bell says confidently: “We will find a way to save you and your baby.” Bell hires Dr. Walter Wallace, a veteran surgeon with a controversial past, to help him run the hospital.
Dr. Wallace is portrayed by Dermot Mulroney. He’s known for his roles on Shameless (Sean Pierce), New Girl (Russell Shiller), Enlightened (Jeff Flender), and Friends (Gavin Mitchell), among others. Mulroney is also well recognized for his roles in films with Julia Roberts (August: Osage County, My Best Friend’s Wedding), and in About Schmidt (Randall Hertzel), J. Edgar (Colonel Schwarzkopf), Dirty Grandpa (David Kelly), among others. Pure Genius airs Thursdays at 10pm on CBS.
