You know those t-shirts that say “My pal went to __ and all I got was this lousy t-shirt”? Well the University of Utah looked at 80 million tweets from more than 603K people and you know what they found out? We like coffee, pizza and beer. Thanks. Of course there’s much more to it, as the scientists dig into the data to try to find patterns that will reveal more about our national health. But the surface takeaway is that we tweet about caffeine, hops and crust.
Interestingly only about 5% of the tweets mentioned food or beverages at all, so if you feel bombarded with “chicken salad for lunch today tweets” you need to follow some new people. The two big winners in a commerce sense are Starbucks and craft beer makers. Coffee and beer were numbers 1 and 2, but “Starbucks” and “IPA” (for India Pale Ale, a craft beer staple) were also in the top five on their own. So it really reads Coffee, beer, pizza, more coffee, more beer (the good kind).
