The NFL is widely considered the most popular sports league in America, but on Twitter it lags behind the NBA in followers. Both leagues joined Twitter in 2009. As of today the NBA has built the “largest Twitter community of any sports league in the world with more than 22 million followers,” according to the league, which just announced it will feature more new content exclusively on Twitter. (The NFL has just under 20 million Twitter followers.)
NBA commissioner Adam Silver says “We’re excited about bringing live content to Twitter, which has proven to be an ideal destination for real-time sports conversations.” Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said “Watching NBA basketball together with Twitter is a great experience.” 22 million and counting agree.
