The world champion Cleveland Cavaliers made a pit stop in Las Vegas after capturing the NBA crown. The Cavs partied into the wee hours at the Vegas nightclub XS Las Vegas, spraying and slugging back champagne, beers and anything they wished for — as billionaire Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert picked up the enormous check. It was deserved hedonism — a bubbly coda on the hard work, determination and resilience the Cavaliers showed all season and especially in the playoffs.

And if he was looking on, it might have triggered a pang of recognition for the former Cleveland-based athlete Johnny Manziel, AKA Johnny Football. Manziel’s arrival in Cleveland was, for a brief moment two years ago, almost as big as the news that LeBron James would return to the Cavs. Manziel –admittedly a big fan of all things late night, nightclub, liquid and Vegas — would have liked this party. But the Cavs’ Vegas burner was all about the winners, and Manziel famously lamed out of Cleveland unwilling to curtail his partying. The Cavs’ championship will mean a lot to many, but there is hope in some corners that it will show Johnny Football the proper way to get to the Vegas nightclub. Like the old joke says: How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice, practice, practice.
