The famous quote about how difficult the US Open setups can be comes from Sandy Tatum, who sat on the USGA Executive Committee. After hearing the complaints from players who felt the courses were nearly impossible, making failure an inevitable result, Tatum said, “we’re not trying to embarrass the best players in the world. We’re trying to identify them.”
Jordan Spieth, unquestionably one of the golfers the USGA is trying to identify at Oakmont this week, will want to revisit that quote after his experience at the 17th hole. Spieth hit what he thought was a perfect shot, but which somehow rolled back into the giant bunker known as Big Mouth. Spieth was none too happy, as you’ll hear.
Jordan Spieth thought he made an incredible shot at 17….oops, it rolled into the bunker https://t.co/1UNjQgfW28 pic.twitter.com/uxcqJMjvyZ
