No. 2 seed Andy Murray has had a plodding go of the French Open so far. Murray has been tested early and often and forced to make deep calls on his emotional and physical reserves. Against crowd favorite Frenchman Richard Gasquet in the quarterfinal, Murray again looked as if he would have some major trouble. He lost the first set 7-5 and needed every ounce of luck, wit, and skill to secure the second set, snatching Gasquet’s momentum with a 7-6 (7-3) win to draw the match to even.
Then Andy Murray, looking like Clark Kent with clay on his shoes, seemed to enter a phone booth somewhere at Roland Garros. Because out for the third set came Superman. Murray finished off the match as though he’d just woken from a bad dream with renewed purpose. Final match score was 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0, 6-2. Murray then put away his cape and prepared for the semifinals, where he’ll face defending champion Stan Wawrinka.
