Moving from the Universal Sports channel to NBCSN (NBC Sports Network) will give the 2016 Boston Marathon the opportunity reach millions more viewers. NBCSN’s marathon coverage beings at 8:30 am on Monday, April 18. The network plans 4-1/2 hours of coverage, signing off at 1 pm. Unlike most televised sports events, the Boston Marathon presents broadcasters with an opportunity to cover what’s virtually three separate contests — with three unique storylines. There are the elite runners on the men’s and women’s sides. Then there is the arguably bigger story of the everyday people who run the famous race to challenge themselves — and not any world records. Some of these people will finish long after the broadcast signs off.
For the 2016 Boston Marathon the elite women runners start time is 9:32 am. The elite men begin at 10 am. The elites will finish, unlike our emotional favorites, long before the 1 pm broadcast does. Viewers who want watch on devices can download the NBC Sports Live Extra app for a livestream. The Boston Marathon livestream for browser watching can be seen at nbcsports.com/live-extra.
