Outlaw country music legend Steve Young died at age 73. His son, musician Jubal Lee Young, shared news of his father’s death on Facebook. Jubal Lee was succinct and powerful in praising his father, whom he said was the “last person who could be content to be trapped in a broken mind and body.” Steve Young was the realest of the real deals. His songs were recorded by The Eagles and Hank Williams Jr. to name just a few. He died at home in Nashville.
Jubal Lee begins his tribute to his father with the lyric: “Turn supernatural, take me to stars and let me play.” A brilliant way to understand his passing, and a gift from father to son, and from artist to his fans. And then the son says simply the most we can ever really say of the dead who have moved us with their art: “I celebrate his freedom, as well, and I am grateful for the time we had.”
