The classic version is by Chet Baker. But Elvis Costello does his finest to own this Rodgers and Hart classic himself in this short passionate take that somehow holds both the heartbreak and effervescence of love in every line. (He’s got competition not just from Baker, but Ella Fitzgerald and Sinatra too.)
And then in the live version below this one, Costello slows it down even further, picking at an acoustic guitar mutely. The concert slows down the way the world does when love strikes. Two marvelous performances with a song perfectly matched to an artist.
