La’Porsha Renae of McComb, Mississippi is one of the 13 young women who’ve made it to the Top 24 on the fifteenth and final season of American Idol. She says she always knew she would make it on the show one day. She first auditioned for Idol when she was 16. (She didn’t get a ticket.) After graduating from high school, she got married and moved to South Carolina with her husband who was in the US Air Force. La’Porsha says: “There was a lot of abuse…there were numerous assaults.” She left her husband and moved to California.
She later forgave him, moved back to McComb and became pregnant. But the abuse started again. She says when he nearly choked her to death, she realized she had to leave. She and her baby daughter Nayale moved to a shelter. Soon after, La’Porsha, Nayale and La’Porsha’s mother drove to audition for American Idol. “I think we’re well on our way. I really do think that getting the golden ticket for American Idol it’s just the start of something really great.” American Idol airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8pm on FOX.
