Downton Abbey may have been exposed as not quite as posh as it sounds by Jimmy Fallon’s accent-free antics. But the actual show still sounds upper crust to Americans, even when we’re firmly in the downstairs section of the Upstairs/Downstairs drama. But modernity is always creeping in on Downton Abbey — and it took over this week as Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) and Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) had a verbal spat worthy of the Real Housewives franchise or even Kanye West.
For a minute, the elegant English ladies sounded like they might be trolling in some woebegone internet comments section. Downton, of course, is a long way from the bottom of the Huffpost. But this exchange sounds like it could be recounted on Andy Cohen‘s Watch What Happens Live:
Edith: “I know you to be a nasty, jealous, scheming bitch!”
Mary: “Now listen, you pathetic — ”
Edith: “You’re a bitch!”
