Kenia Monge was an attractive, 19-year-old who met some girlfriends at a downtown Denver bar. (She used a fake ID.) Monge got separated from her friends, left the bar and then, intoxicated, wandered the city streets. Police discovered surveillance footage of Monge walking into a hotel. That night he met 31-year-old Travis Forbes who initially tried to help Monge reunite with her friends. Since she left her phone at the bar, Forbes drove her around in his van and let her use his phone. When she passed out in Forbes’ van he raped Monge, twice. When she came to she started fighting him. Forbes strangled her to death.
Forbes pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. Right before being sentenced to life in prison, he said he “didn’t mean to do it.” In court, sobbing, he said, “It was a mistake. I didn’t plan it.” Dateline NBC will air its investigative report about Monge on Friday, January 1 at 9pm on NBC.
